BARRY SAYS 2010-2011 WILL BE HIS LAST AS OU PLAY-BY-PLAY MAN
NORMAN, Okla. -- As he embarks on his 50th year in broadcasting Division I football and basketball, Bob Barry announced today that this will be his last as the radio play-by-play voice of the Oklahoma Sooners.  He plans to work through both the football and men’s basketball season during the 2010-11 school year. The 79-year-old Barry, who has been the voice for both of Oklahoma’s major state universities, said he had targeted 2010 as the year he would wrap up his play-by-play duties.  No announcer has called more Sooner games than Barry. “It’s time,” he said.  “I had been thinking about it for a couple years and kind of pointing toward this year as my last.  The time just felt right. “I’ve been so fortunate and so lucky to have the job I’ve had.  I tell young people all of the time that when you find the thing you love to do, then do it to the best of your ability, it’s really not work at all.” University of Oklahoma President David L. OKLAHOMA ENTERS SEASON AT NO. 7

from Oklahoma Sports Information NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma will open the 2010 season ranked No. 7 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll, which was released Saturday. OU was one of five teams to receive at least one first-place vote. Defending national champion Alabama came in at No. 1 overall. The 2010 season marks the 52nd preseason ranking for the Sooners in the 60 years the AP has released a preseason poll (87%). Oklahoma holds AP records for most weeks ranked No. 1 (97), most weeks ranked in Top 2 (194), most weeks ranked in Top 5 (370) and most weeks ranked in Top 10 (510). Currently, seven of OU's 2010 opponents are either ranked or received votes. Texas came in at No. 5 and Florida State at No. 20. Cincinnati, Missouri, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State all received votes. OU opens the 2010 season at home against Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. (CT). LEWIS TABBED FOR BUTKIS WATCH LIST
Junior linebacker sits on three national award watch lists.
by OU Sports Information NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma junior linebacker Travis Lewis has been named to the watch list for the 2010 Dick Butkus Award released this week by The Butkus Foundation. The award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker and will be announced in early December on the campus of the award winner. Lewis enters the 2010 season after leading the Sooners in tackles the past two years, accumulating 253 career tackles, the third-best total by a linebacker in the Stoops’ era. The San Antonio, Texas, native is a two-time All-Big 12 first team member and has cracked the double-digit tackles mark in 11 games of his career. Oklahoma linebackers have won the award on four occasions, twice under Bob Stoops as Teddy Lehman (2003) and Rocky Calmus (2001) each took home the honor. The Butkus list is the third award to name Lewis to its watch list this season as he was previously named to the watch lists for the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards. BROYLES NAMED TO HORNUNG WATCH LIST
Junior wide receiver sits on three national award watch lists.
NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma receiver Ryan Broyles has been named to the 2010 Paul Hornung watch list released by The Louisville Sports Commission. In its first year, the award will be presented to the most versatile player in college football. The list, comprised of 48 players, was compiled by a panel of college football experts based on 2009 statistics and expectations heading into the 2010 season. The Sooners top returning receiver, Broyles set an Oklahoma record with 89 receptions in 2009 and tied the school mark with 15 receiving TDs. Broyles also ranked fourth nationally with a 15.87 punt return average. The MVP of the Sun Bowl with 13 receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns, Broyles finished the season with 1,120 receiving yards, third best in OU history. The Hornung Award is the third award to name Broyles to its watch list in the past week as he was previously named to the watch lists for the Biletnikoff and Maxwell Awards. OU's HAND HAD ANOTHER INJURY SETBACK
by OU Sports Information (Norman, OK) - Oklahoma sophomore Whitney Hand will be out of action approximately five months following microfracture surgery Tuesday to repair cartilage damage in her right knee. The 2009 Big 12 Freshman of the Year was scheduled for a scope to eliminate swelling. During the surgery, discovery of a cartilage defect dictated the additional procedure. “This is really just a continuation of repair from the original injury,” OU head coach Sherri Coale said, “and while we’re certainly disappointed that her ‘finish line,’ so to speak, has been moved back a bit, the important thing is that she will experience a full and complete recovery. “Whitney has a remarkable mindset. Her faith and her complete dedication to our team will drive her through the next few months.” Hand suffered an ACL tear in the knee during OU’s win over San Diego State on Nov. 27

BOX OUT THREE TO SIX WEEKS
Norman, OK -- According to OU Head Football Coach Bob Stoops,middle linebacker Austin Box has a back injury will be out of action three to six weeks. OU Defensive Coordinator and linebacker coach Brent Venables said that the OU medical staff was confident that Box’s situation was manageable and that Box would return to the field this season, and the coach said he hoped that it was sooner rather than later. According to the OU Sports information office, Box was not injured during practice. In fact he practiced well on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He apparently began feeling pain in his back on Sunday evening and was admitted to Goddard Medical Center.

Given annually to the nation's top receiver, the 2010 Biletnikoff award winner will be announced Thursday, Dec. 9, at The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show. The Sooners top returning receiver, Broyles set an Oklahoma record with 89 receptions in 2009 and tied the school mark with 15 receiving TDs. Broyles also ranked fourth nationally with a 15.87 punt return average. The MVP of the Sun Bowl with 13 receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns, Broyles finished the season with 1,120 receiving yards, third best in OU history.
